If you have never applied a varnish transfer decal, we suggest you order two decals when you place your order. You can return the extra decal if it is not needed.

Hands and Surface Preparation

Hands should be clean and free of oil and perspiration. The surface on which the decal is to be applied must be clean and free from dust, grease, oil, polish and dirt. We recommend cleaning the surface thoroughly with Naphtha or Benzine. Customers use a variety of chemicals to clean the surface, we DO NOT have experience with all the various cleaning solutions. We DO have experience with Naphtha and Benzine so that is what we recommend.

LACQUER • SHELLAC • SOLVENT • GOLD LEAF TRANSFER CEMENT • POLYURETHANE • WHITE GLUE • ETC..

Piano decals have been applied using varnish for over one hundred years, long before many of todays modern finishing products were developed. We recommend using VARNISH as the adhesive, although many other substances have been used successfully over the years. If you are going to use something other than varnish as the adhesive, we suggest testing the substance on a decal before you attempt to apply the decal to a final surface. A few of todays modern lacquers and other clear finishes will dissolve some of the inks that were used in decal manufacturing.

WHILE IT IS NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO BRUSH VARNISH PERFECTLY ON THE IMAGE OF THE DECAL IT MAKES CLEANUP EASYER IF THERE IS NOT A LOT OF EXTRA ADHESIVE.

If enough varnish shows around the design to require removal, use benzine or naphtha on a soft cloth to remove any excess. Wipe carefully around the design, be careful not to soak the decal too much as this could raise the decal around the edges.
